Programme
In the 15th century, the 'learned' polyphony of the Low Countries produced by scholars such as Josquin Desprez, Jacob Obrecht, Alexander Agricola dispersed throughout Europe via courts and cathedrals, thanks to the many contacts between musicians travelling the whole of Europe in the footsteps of their internationally entangled clients: the nobility and higher clergy.

In 1517, the political and family ties between Burgundy and Spain were such that made Charles V have his renowned Flemish chapel, named Capilla Flamenca, embark at Vlissingen to make it for his new empire in Spain. And even if the complex polyphonic music there sounded "exotic" to the Spanish people, it quickly conquered all churches, cathedrals and monasteries on the peninsula, mainly thanks to the politics of 'Los Reyes Catolicos'. The 'elevated' sounds indeed revealed a tip of the veil that hung about the music of the spheres.

At the same time and in the wake of Columbus, missionaries transported the printed masses and motets by Nicolas Gombert, Cristobal de Morales to Latin America. With remarkable astonishment, the Indians, led by Spanish musicians, started to combine these polyphonic techniques with their traditional spiritual music, leading to a unique fresh style. We see this emerging in many a villancico in this region. And until well into the 17th century, Latin America remains true to the style characteristics of polyphonic music from previous generations, so that baroque music is not to break through here until the 18th century.

In this programme you will hear music by the Flemish masters as well by Spanish and Mexican composers: Agricola, Desprez, de Morales, de Narvaez, Lopez Capillas, de Padilla and many more ...
