ALEXANDER AGRICOLA

 Purchase
I magine an early baroque composer being teleported into the late fifteenth century, absorbing the musical language of his new environment, and bringing to it his particular sensibility: a rather far-fetched analogy, perhaps, but one that gives an impression of Alexander Agricola's startling, mercurial imagination. Quite simply, no other composer of the so-called 'Josquin generation' has as many tricks up his sleeve. A near-contemporary musician once referred to his music as 'crazy and strange': no wonder. Its quirky humour offers a musical equivalent of the paintings of Pieter Brueghel the Elder, in which games and play sometimes conceal a serious purpose, and are sometimes indulged in, quite simply, for their own sakes."
Extract from the commentary by Agricola specialist Fabrice Fitch in the cd booklet.

Alexander Agricola (ca. 1456-1506) was born in Ghent and was not only a contemporary of Josquin Desprez but also one of the most exciting composers of his period. Of the eight Masses by Agricola that have survived, the Missa in myne zyn is the most demanding to perform and the most elaborate, making use of every possible technique to include the thematic material of Agricola's own 3-part song In minen sin. The secular pieces recorded here lend themselves particularly well to the techniques of ornamentation and improvisation that the composer himself suggests. Agricola's writing perfectly suits the one-to-a-part performing style which Capilla Flamenca has championed for years.
